Bassist/composer Avishai Cohen was one of the first Israel-born jazz musicians to have a big success in the U.S. He was listed in DownBeat Magazine as a “jazz visionary of global proportions” and from Bass Player Magazin as “one of the 100 most influential bassists”. At the age of 14 Cohen lived partially in the U.S.A. and moved permanently to New York in 1992. After his studies in classical/jazz piano and bass in Israel (Music & Arts Academy and with Maestro Michael Klinghoffer) and in the United States (St. Louis) he performed with fellow students such as pianist Brad Mehldau and played sessions with Paquito D’Rivera, Joshua Redman, Roy Hargrove and Wynton Marsalis. After studying with bassist Andy Gonzalez, Cohen performed in a Latin jazz band that included Abel Rodriguez and Ray Santiago. As a result of this experience, combined with his deep understanding and love of Latin music and jazz, Cohen got the call to join pianist Danilo Perezs. In 1996 he became a founding member of the legendary Chick Corea New Sextet, Origin.
In addition to Chick Corea, he has also recorded with Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, Nnenna Freelon, Claudia Acuna, Alicia Keys and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Avishai Cohen has become a first call musician in multiple genres and is heavily involved in his own projects. In 2001 he started his International Vamp Band and recorded “Lyla” (Hebrew for “night”) under his own label „Razdaz Recordz“ which immediately landed in the Top 20 of the US Jazz Charts. The pianist Shai Maestro is the musical partner of Avishai Cohen tonight.
